A star ceiling is not a printed image or a projection. Individual fibre-optic strands are threaded through the ceiling plane so that each one finishes flush with the surface. A single remote light source — the illuminator — feeds the whole harness, and the light travels down the fibres to their tips.
Because the source sits away from the ceiling, nothing at the surface generates heat or carries current. When the lamp inside the illuminator reaches end of life, one unit is serviced instead of hundreds of points, and the ceiling itself is never opened.
What separates a convincing sky from a decorative pattern is distribution. Mixed fibre diameters give the field depth, irregular spacing stops the eye reading a grid, and density is varied deliberately so parts of the ceiling stay dark. We agree that distribution on a drawing before a single strand is pulled.

No. The fibres carry light rather than current, so they do not wear out, heat up or burn out. The only serviceable part is the illuminator, which sits away from the ceiling in an accessible position agreed during planning.
A membrane star ceiling needs the same drop as any stretch ceiling plus room for the harness to run above it. In a plasterboard ceiling the fibres sit within the existing void. We measure the room and confirm the figure before committing to a substrate.
Usually yes. A stretch membrane fixes to a perimeter track rather than to the ceiling above, which makes retrofit straightforward. What has to be found is a route for the fibre and a home for the illuminator — that is the part worth checking early.
The ceiling points themselves carry no electricity and produce no heat, which is one reason the system suits wet areas. The illuminator is placed in a dry, ventilated location, and its connection is carried out by licensed electrical professionals.
