The Floor Is Only as Good as What Is Under It
Almost every flooring complaint — hollow spots, creaking, gapping, lifting edges, visible waves under raking light — traces back to the subfloor rather than the material. Flatness tolerance, moisture content and movement all get decided before the first plank goes down.
We assess and correct the substrate as part of the same scope rather than treating it as someone else's problem, which is why floor preparation and levelling sits alongside installation in what we do.
Materials We Install
Solid Hardwood
Solid timber throughout, so it can be sanded and refinished repeatedly over decades. Sensitive to humidity swings, which makes it better suited above grade than in basements.
Engineered Hardwood
A real timber wear layer over a dimensionally stable core. It handles Vancouver humidity and concrete slabs far better than solid, and suits wide-plank formats and radiant heat.
Laminate
A printed wear surface over a dense core. Scratch-resistant and cost-effective for rentals and high-traffic areas, but it cannot be refinished once worn.
Vinyl Plank
Fully waterproof and forgiving of moisture, which makes it the practical answer for basements, laundry rooms and rental turnovers. Quality varies enormously between products.
Commercial & Multi-Residential
Repeat-unit installation with attention to acoustic underlay requirements, transitions and scheduling around other trades on active sites.
Transitions & Stairs
Where the floor meets tile, microcement or a staircase is where poor installations show. Nosings and thresholds are detailed to match the floor rather than added afterwards.
Choosing Between Materials
The honest answer usually depends on three things: whether the floor sits on concrete or joists, how much moisture the room sees, and whether you want the option to refinish in fifteen years. We will tell you when a cheaper material is the better technical choice for a particular room.
Our Installation Sequence
Assessment
Subfloor flatness, moisture and soundness are checked before anything is ordered. This is where the real scope of a job becomes clear.
Preparation
Grinding down high spots, filling low spots and, where needed, a self-levelling pour to bring the whole floor within tolerance.
Acclimatisation
Timber products are left in the space to reach equilibrium with its humidity before installation. Skipping this step is a common cause of later gapping.
Installation & Detailing
Layout is set from the most visible sightline, expansion gaps are respected, and transitions, thresholds and stair nosings are finished to match.
Flooring Questions
Can hardwood go over a concrete slab?
Engineered hardwood, yes, with the correct moisture barrier and a slab within flatness tolerance. Solid hardwood directly on slab is far riskier and we would usually steer you away from it.
Do I always need floor levelling?
Not always. Some subfloors are already within tolerance. We measure rather than assume, and we tell you if preparation is not needed.
Which floor suits a rental or high-traffic space?
Vinyl plank or a quality laminate, in most cases. They resist moisture and scratching, and replacing a section is straightforward between tenancies.
Can you match a new floor to an existing one?
Sometimes closely, rarely perfectly — existing floors have aged and ambered. Where an exact match is not achievable we will say so and suggest a deliberate transition instead of a poor blend.
